How Can Swelling And Inflammation In The Ankles Be Treated?

I went to Er in May, bec I had bad chest pain. They couldn t detect any heart problem but since then I have bad swelling of the ankles redness, and heat in both legs. It s already many months. My rumathologist diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy from fluid retentiontion. I just looked at the hospital notes, I realized they gave my sodium chloride IV. That explains all the pain and swelling I m going through for so many months. My internal dr. Gave me duretic but as soo as I stop the swelling comes back. I m so frausteated and angry at Er knowing that I had also issues with kidney many years ago due to lupus. Now also lupus flared up after many years of being in control. I have bad joint pains and aching all over. I m on high dose of prednisone again and it s just makes me so angry. can you suggest what I should do?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Restrict salt intake, take food rich in iron, take ORS, soups, juice to maintain your electrolyte balance, take mineral supplements to help reduce the swelling and inflammation. For pain take Acetaminophen/NSAIDS and keep your foot elevated while on bed (on a pillow) or when sitting (on stool).

You should get all kidney function tests done, for swelling ankles is indicative of developing kidney disease or lymphedema. Get test for RA done. Get physically examined and evaluated.

Take care.

Regards.
