How Can Swelling In The Feet Be Treated?

I had a severe sprain in my foot 3 months back after which i was bedridden for a week. Now, the pain has reduced a lot but swelling is still there. It gets worse with a bit much of walking. I am in a college hostel so can t stop minimum activities. How do i get rid of the swelling?

Hi,

The swelling is part of the body's inflammatory response and is due to the release of certain chemicals that then cause fluid to collect in the affected area. After a long period of time, changes can sometimes occur (formation of scar tissue), that cause the traumatized area to be slightly permanently larger than normal. This does not occur in all cases.

The main treatment would be rest, warm compress, bandages to reduce swelling and anti inflammatory pain medications such as Naproxen, Cataflam or Ibuprofen. Even without the presence of pain, these medications would help to reduce the swelling.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
