Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can Swelling In The Hand Take To Heal After An Injury?
A sago palm frond punctured the back of my hand almost a week ago. The area still hurts and has some swelling, no open wound. It feels very tight under the skin. I am icing occasionally, which helps, and I continue to put antibiotic appointment on top. Is there anything I should watch for or be concerned with? How long should this take to heal?
Hello As you said it has been a week, so now at this stage of your injury I would suggest you to do cold and hot fomentation alternatively till it heals properly. It will work better.
As swelling is there, you should keep your injured part elevated. Try to keep it above the level of heart. Doing this will help in reduction of swelling. If it seems to be difficult to keep your hand elevated during day time then try doing it in night when you go to sleep. Adjust your or take some support and keep it elevated.
If you feel pain then you can take tablets like Ibuprofen. It will help in reducing swelling too. And the antibiotic ointment which you are applying on the affected area is of no use. As you said there is no open wound. So stop using it.
Thanks Dr. Tripat Mehta
