How Can Swollen Left Back Bottom Gum At The Wisdom Tooth With Throbbing And Slight Bleeding Be Treated?

The left back bottom gum where my wisdom tooth used to be is swollen, throbbing. When I spit there is a little blood and is clear. I also feel hot and cold at the same time warm on my forehead and cold everywhere else. My wisdom teeth have been out for almost a decade if not more and this is the only space that has done this. What should I do? What s wrong?

Hi,

Swelling and throbbing of gum at the wisdom area when the wisdom tooth is removed with bleeding from the gum in that area can be due to infection in that area that can lead to inflammation. Secondly it can also be due to inflammation of the gum due to any over retained root piece that might have left while extraction and over the period of time it can move upward and can cause pressure of the gum leading to inflammation.

Infection and inflammation can also be a cause of bleeding from the gum. So the first thing that you should do is to get an X-ray of the throbbing area done so that the cause of the the symptoms that you are facing can be ruled out. The line of treatment will depend on the exact cause of the pain, swelling and bleeding. Like in case of infection localized cleaning of the area and a course of antibiotics can help. If there is retained root piece seen in the x ray it has to be removed.

As of now, I would suggest you to start doing warm saline gargles and also start doing antiseptic mouthwash gargles twice a day to reduce infection and inflammation. You can also apply antiseptic oral gel like Chlorhexidine gel and spit out the saliva few times after application to avoid swallowing. You should take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. Take soft meals and avoid and hard, spicy or irritant foods. Drink plenty of cool water as it also helps in reducing inflammation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
