How Can The Painful Knee Lump With Bruising Be Treated?

Last Thursday when I was getting off of my bed my left knee gave out. At that time I noticed a good sized lump on the superior lateral side of my left patella. A few weeks prior to this I had a deep purple/black bruise for about a month before it started to go away located on the back of my left calf below the left knee. This lump I found is quite painful and painful to the touch and the vicodins my doctor gave me for the bakers cyst in my right knee are not helping. Is this something I should be concerned about?
