How Can The Sense Of Taste Be Restored After A Stroke?
A person who had a stroke 5 weeks ago continues to have outpatient therapy three times a week. He is progressively very well. At this time he does not have feeling on the side affected by the stroke even though he does therapy exercises. Also he has tried eating his favorite foods but his taste buds are not reacting to foods. He is eating but cannot taste the food. Any advise on these questions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for tour advice
Olfactory & gustatory functions have been reported to be affected after a stroke. These are deleterious outcomes after a stroke. It is good to know that the patient is recovering. There is no such treatment to improve the taste & this is frustrating. You can visit an ENT or otolaryngologist & get examined.
Talking to a dietitian & doing regular physical exercise under a physiotherapist can be of help.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
