How Can Tinnitus Along With Wheezing Be Treated?

I have had tinnitus in my right ear for years. I am 79 years old and mostly deaf in that ear. My recent problem however, is different. When I get up from resting both of my ears often go into a wheezing mode that is not as high pithed but is louder and oscillates up and down. It is very annoying. I do have some stress going on right now, by the way. Dennis

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tinnitus is common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However it this lasts for longer period then it should be evaluated. Tinnitus can occur due to causes like chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc. Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, X-ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly. In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.
