How Can Uncontrolled Seizures Be Treated?

My daughter has uncontrol seizures and is currently taking Onfi 20mg twice a day, Benzel 1200 mg three times a day and she has been taking Limictal for more than ten years but every time she has surgery the antibotics block the birth control pill which causes the limictal level to sore and so recently she went from 300 mg twice a day to 100 mg twice a day and now is ramping back up slowly (currently at 175 mg twice a day) because of the side effects. We also notice that the rash on her face went away with the reduction of limictal but now has return with the increase in limictal. Is there another drug that might be used to replace limictal? thanks Bill

Hi and Welcome to Ask A Doctor service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Sorry to hear of her disease.
.you are very right limictal may have many side effects and specially the rash is pretty common with it .In such cases we always try to switch the drug to another one .
We have a lot of choices in treatment for seizure control and all have its pros and cones. But if limectal is causing her probelm , my personal advice would be that we slowly tapper this drug off and while start another one like valproic acid, or tegral or a lot other newer agents. Howe'ver you should not do it without consultation of your doctor .You can discuss this issue with him.
Hope I have answered the question. please feel free to ask anything in this regards.
kind Regards
Dr
