How Can Unwanted Pregnancy After Intercourse Be Prevented?

I had unprotected sex last night and this morning I got my period. I do not want to get pregnant. Do I need to purchase emergency contraceptive such as Plan B or am I not likely to become pregnant due to the menstration process already occurring. I’m thinking that I will purchase and use Plan B just to be sure pregnancy doesn’t occur but I am afraid to mess with my menstration cycle if it’s unnecessary. Please advise.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are not likely to conceive since you are having your period. But if you wish to ensure this is not the case, then you can use the emergency contraception. Conception is most likely 10 to 14 days after the start of the last period.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
