How Can Vertigo Be Treated?

I have just traveled home from China and experienced a lot of heights, climbing, train and elevator rides, etc. I am dizzy but have experienced this before - vertigo and also have had a ruptured ear drum. Will taking meclizine help or should I see a doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your question.

The first measure in the treatment of vertigo which occurs under your circumstances is watchful waiting, as often times, it resolves spontaneously.

However while waiting, avoid gymnastic activities and sudden head movements. Meclizine would also help relieve you of the vertigo.

If after a few weeks, there is still no complete resolution of the vertigo, consult an ear, nose, throat (ENT) specialist who would conduct a procedure called cannalith repositioning procedure (CRP) to help relocate stones in the inner ear which may be causing the vertigo.

If CRP fails, the doctor would consider surgical treatment involving the organ of balance in the inner ear.

But first, we begin with watchful waiting.

I hope i have been able to help you.

Please get back to me if you have more queries.

Best wishes.
