How Can You Stop Horrible Nightmares ?

When I had open heart surgery (5 bypasses), they kept me heavily medicated for about a week. During that time I had horrible nightmares that were repetitive. This was a worse experience than having the heart attack. I still have this fear that if I ever have to face surgery again, that I will have similar nightmares. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening? Michael S. ...... Your answer was very helpful because it is obvious that you know exactly what I went through. Is there any way I can email you? Part of my nightmare was very similar to yours.

First of all, may God bless you and keep you. I had triple bypass, so I know a little of what I preach. The sedation will, in fact, cause nightmares, alter your taste for food, and other side-effects. Unfortunately, the sedation is necessary to control pain, heart activity, etc. I remember repeatedly dreaming that one of the nurses was riding a bicycle down the hall. When I told him about it one day, he laughed his ass off. Your fear is understandable; if you ever do have to have surgery again, discuss this with your surgeon and cardio;ogist ahead of time; they might be able to use something different. I'm betting they filled you full of morphine; that stuff will really play with your head, but it's about the best painkiller around.
