Congenital abnormalities due to infection during pregnancy is most commonly caused by TORCH infections, which is Toxoplasmosis, Rubella and Cytomegalovirus and Herpes infections. Rubella infection causes congenital rubella syndrome. The classical triad of congenital rubella syndrome consist of involvement of eye, defect of heart and CNS involvement. Cytomegalovirus virus infections causes a syndrome associated with prematurity, jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopenic purpura, pneumonitis and central nervous system damage. Even if the pregnancy is continued till term the survival of the baby with defects is negligible. I suggest you let her treating doctors decide further course of action as a practical approach is required in this case. Thanks.
