How Does Silver Bi-chloride Affect A Person?

Curiosity question after reading a newspaper account of an item which happened n 1892. It said, after a man was taken into custody by police on a charge of drunk and disorderly he was placed in Justice McCabe s Institute and given a few shots of bi-chloride of silver. Why would they do this? What affect would bi-chloride of silver have had on the man?

silver chloride is used as an antidote in mercury poisoning.in ayurveda Rajata Bhasma’ a combination of metallic silver, free sulphur,ferric oxide,calcium,silver chloride and traces of sodium, potassium and aluminium is used in treating different types of diseases.
