How Does The Body Produce Butyrate After Removal Of The Colon?

Hi Dr Narasi, in November last year I had a 3cm caseros tuner in my colon and subsequently had most of my colon removed. A few months later I had a blood test that showed my glucose sugar to be 9. Prior to the operation I was 3.5. After watching the tv program Ask the Doctor on gut bacteria where it showed that by consuming resistant starches your colon produces butyrate which is important to your health. what happens if you don t have a colon? How does my body make butyrate ? I have a reasonable amount of fibre.

Hi,

The butyrate theory is wrong and the body has got nothing to do with butyrate. You might experience problems like loose stools and malabsorption after colectomy.
Nothing much to worry and your gastroenterologist will deal it nicely.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Dr. Shinas Hussain,
