How Does The Thyroid Work?

Can one thyroid take over and produce enough T4 and T3 to replace the left side which was removed surgically due to Hurthle cell lesions non malignant? Can 1 thyroid do the work of two? Or will the person need supplements for life such as desicated pig thyroid?

Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM! I can understand your query.
Six weeks after surgically removal of one of the thyroid lobes, is recommended to check the thyroid hormonal level.
This will decide if the remained lobe can compensate the work of the other lobe, so if there will be the need to take hormonal replacement or not.
In general it is very individual and no one can predict if one lobe can produce enough hormones or not.
If after 6 weeks the thyroid function is within the normal ranges it means that you don't need to take supplements.
