How Effective Is Birth Control?

Hi I m an 18 years old and My boyfriend are considering sex. We re both very worried about pregnancy, however, as we are both not in a responsible position to have a child and do not believe in abortion. Our concern is that doctors assume teenagers are going to have sex and tell them birth control is the best option IF they re going to have sex. So my question is, if I am on birth control completely regularly and on time, does that make it completely safe for me to have sex without ever worrying about pregnancy? We are in no pressure to have sex anytime soon if it poses a pregnancy risk, but I also don t know if we re just being too paranoid. P.s. There is no concern at all about stds.

Hi,

Yes, birth control of any type will make you up to 99% safe if you use them regularly and correctly. 99% is a pretty high success ratio to use them without worrying about pregnancy.

If you are thinking about starting birth control pills, you should wait for about one cycle to complete before having sex. This will give you time to ascertain if the pills suit you and dose can be adjusted if needed. The only care you have to take is you take the medicine at the same time every day and not miss a pill.

Another option is condom. If you and your partner are not allergic to latex, condom can be used whenever you have sex. It has added advantage of protection against STDs though you do not have to be concerned about that. Female condoms are also available in the market.

There are also intrauterine devices (IUD) available like copper T. Your gynecologist can put it into your uterus and you do not have to worry about pills or condoms. When you plan to get pregnant, you can get it removed and concieve. However, some women have heavy menstrual flow due to it. You can immediately have sex without worrying about concieving as soon as you get IUD.

To conclude, birth control measures depend on individual comfort and choice. You can discuss the options with your partner and decide upon one method.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. Please let us know if you have any other query.
