How Fast Can I Get Pregnant After Stopping 9 Years Of Birth Control Pills?

I have been on a low dose combination birth control pill for about 9 years now, however it is extremely expensive. I am about to finish my last pack this week, and I was wondering how quickly can you get pregnant after stopping the pill? I wanted to try getting pregnant, and if it doesn t happen within a month or a little over, than I am going to start a new lose dose birth control pill that is less expensive.

Hello and I hope I can help you today.

The length of time you have been on the poll has no bearing on how soon you can conceive. The pill is out of your system in 24 hours after stopping it. So if you do not start a new pack, you can conceive even 7 days later.

In my practice I have seen many women, especially women over 35, assume it will take them a long time to get pregnant so they stop the pill before their wedding and are pregnant by their honeymoon.

So I do not suggest you have unprotected sex during the time you are searching for another affordable birth control pill unless you are sure you would be OK with getting pregnant. All pills are effective in preventing pregnancy, so it is not worth spending a lot of money on one kind over another.

If you are trying to conceive, you should begin taking folic acid, which is a B vitamin that can help reduce the risk of birth defects.

I hope I answered your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
