How Get Off Vicodin Without Any Side Effects?

Hi, Im realizing I am addicted to Vicodin, I was put on this medication for bad knee pain I have but now need to get off the meds. How can I do it at home and safely with minimal side effects? Can I taper off? How can I do this without having to be hospitalized??
