So to determine if I do have it. What kind of tests do doctors usually do? Also, the past two months have been awful with cramps during ovulation. What can I do to relieve the pain?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. PCOS can be diagnosed by ultrasound examination. Polycystic ovary will be present in PCOS.It is not must that all those who are having PCOS should have fertility problems. If periods are irregular and ovulation is absent then there will be problems in conception. But for some they only have problems like acne and facial hair growth. Insulin resistance is the major problem in PCOS. Taking metformin or thiazolidinediones like pioglitazone will be helpful for this. Mild cramps can be relieved by hot water bag application on abdomen. Medications like mefenamic acid and dicyclomine will be helpful if cramps are more. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
