How Is Propafenone Different From Sotalol?

My cardiologist wants me to stop taking propafenone and switch to sotalol. My electro physiologist wants me to take Tikosyn. What are the differences between the two? I have mitral valve prolapse which they feel has caused 2 episodes of afib in less than 18 months; cardioverted both times. Am on warfarin

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello thanks for your question

Both of them are antiarrhythmic .Propafenone is sodium channel blockers and sotalol is potassium channel blocker. Propafenone is used more to convert when on afib. If the episodes of afib r not that often u can talk with your doctor the possibility to not use them .The most important thing is the use of anticoagulant.

Kind regards
