How Is Death Ascertained Clinically?

my dad died two weeks ago, his heart stopped beating and his pupils had dialated, the doctor then pronounced him dead. i have had worries whether he was really dead at that moment or the doctor made a wrong judgement. please explain to me what happens inorder to assertain one is trully dead
