How Long After Open Heart Surgery Does Sternum Pain Last?

Hi, my fiance has had open heart surgery in October of 2016 and since he s been home, he s had alot of trouble walking with his left leg where the took the vein out for the bypass also. Also right near/on the sternum part of his stomach, he has this weird sensation and pain... He describes it like something is attached or growing there, it feels likes he says. We ve been to the ER for it too. They have taken x Ray s and stuff but said it s muscular related. I just actually felt it tonight and it feels hard and small, about a quarter size. It feels weird, to me... Anyways. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Some patients experience pain for many years. Most probably it is due to neuropathic pain.

You can take analgesics like tramadol for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
General & Family Physician
