How Long Can Diazepam Be Taken?

Hi i was recently prescribed diazepam 5mg 1xtwice a day along with sertraline and seroquel that i have been on for 4 months for anxiety and panic disorder. My problem is that in less then a week i have already built up a tolerance to the diazepam. Is it safe to continue this medication? I cannot get in to see my regular gp until friday and am unsure wether to continue, to up the dosage or to stop taking it completely. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Diazepam is a medication belonging to the benzodiazepine family, that typically produces a calming effect. It is a drug used for the short-term relief of symptoms related to anxiety disorders. In case you are feeling better with the prescribed medications, you can discontinue it for time being and consult your doctor when he is available. Never increase the dose of any medication without consulting your doctor. Kindly continue with the medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran.S.
