How Long Can An Ureteral Stent Be In The Body?

My husband was not experiencing any pain; just decided to see his urologist for a checkup; Urologist decided to do a complete workup; X-ray showed stone in Kidney; Since April, 2017 my husband has had two lithotripsy procedures; a stint inserted but stone very hard and only very minimal fragments have broken off. Now he is to meet with another doctor in October to get scheduled for a PCNL. Is there a time limit for how long a stent can safely remain in him. He is miserable and lifestyle is affected because of frequent urination caused by the stent.

General Surgeon 's  Response

* According to my long surgical experience, there are various thought and opinion banks from different urosurgeons groups for the stent.

* In general, it is considered that a stent for pre operative procedure is kept for a period of 7-10 days to relieve underlying edema and other events for better procedure success.

* After the surgery , the stent can be kept safely upto a period of 4 - 6 weeks without any major side effects for recovery period.

* Beyond certain period of 6 weeks, due to foreign material of the stent individual body reacts differently and there are chances of
- recurrent infection
- blood in urine
- pain, burning, dysuria
- blockage of the stent and kidney damage
- another stone formations
- so forth.

* So your concern should be the removal of old stent on priority basis and decide for the further curative steps later on with urosurgeon.

Hope I have answered your query.
