How Long Can Birth Control Pills Be Taken?

Is it ok to keep on taking birth control with 28 pills on it? I thought I will be ready to get pregnant after 3months of prescription but it seems like I will be needing a year to pursue it. I kept on with the prescription for 5months now.the purpose of the prescription was to regulate my period. I am already 41 yrs old and in my one year marriage. I just want to know if it is healthy for me to keep on taking it until I am ready at the end of this year.
