How Long Can Medication For Rheumatoid Arthritis Be Ceased?

I am a79 yearold female, who was diagnosed 6 months ago with rheumatoid arthritis. I was told at that time that if I got a cold, flu, or any kind of illness I should discontinue the RAmedications immediately. I started with cold symptoms 8 days ago and stopped the RA meds. The cold is beginning to sound more like bronchitis, severe cough, mucus, sneezing, etc. Maybe I don t need to see a doctor just yet because it seems to be bronchitis. My question is when do I begin taking the RA meds again. My Dr. is out of town.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You must be on biological drugs for treating Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which needs to stop while you are ill. You can resume the medication once a cough, sneeze, mucus production, and fever (if any) subsides.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
