How Long Do The Bruises On Knuckles And Toes Take To Heal?

Can you have a permanent bruise? During my latest football season I got many bruises but the ones that have never gone away and it has now been a month since the season ended was on my big toes. The entire knuckle of both big toes was black/dark purple from bruising at the beginning of the season (September) and are now still there at the same shade (December). Just curious here.

Hello,
You can't have permanent bruising, but the recurrent bruising can cause some permanent discoloration of the skin.
Bruising is bleeding under the skin. As the blood breaks down it can deposit pigments into the skin. This is usually removed by the body's normal healing processes, but if it is recurrent the body may not be able to keep up and permanent discoloration can occur.

Dr. Robinson
