How Long Does MRSA Take To Heal?

My father-in-law has dry gangrene in his left foot, they want to amputate up to his knee. He currently is also fighting off MRSA that he recently got while at a local hospital. He is a diabetic and around 68 years of age. He does not want to have the surgery. How long will he have to live if he does not have the surgery?
