How Long Does Metoprolol Take To Reduce The Blood Pressure Level?
I have been on 100mg atenolol for years. now they are saying that there is a shortage and I cannot get it My doctor switched me to 100 mg metoprolol and and went into atenolol withdraw after three days and ended up in the hospital. Now i am on 200 mg of Metoprolol, my pressure is high, and am wondering how long will it take to take effect?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Metoprolol and many other blood pressure medications might take 1-2 weeks to give the full effect and it is after that time that if not satisfactory results we can consider increasing the dose or adding another medication. Atenolol and Metoprolol are both in the same class of antihypertensives but atenolol has a stronger effect than metoprolol and this is probably why you are having the withdrawal symptoms. If the withdrawal symptoms are improved but blood pressure is still high after 1-2 weeks with metoprolol, the doctor might decide to add another medication to control the blood pressure (like enalapril, amlodipine or hydrochlorthiazide).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
