How Long Does Sertraline Take To Control Depression And Agitation?

i was suffering from depression with agitated mood,lack of concentration,feeling hopeless,sad ,angry ,dizzy,racing heart and pain in heart .i am taking sertraline from 20 days.i feel better now but not fully cured.how can i get out of the present state soon ,any advice.i am a final year student of university and being healthy and focused very important for me now.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Sertraline is a SSRI drug and the drug helps in depression and anxiety by improving serotonin neurotransmission in brain. You have depression and have started taking the drug since last 20 days only. In most individuals the drug usually takes about 4 weeks to show its effects because the drugs cause changes at receptor levels. So I'd advise you to wait for more time to see improvement in your symptoms. Apart from this non medicinal treatment in form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy has been found to be very useful in depression. CBT helps to improve depressive symptoms and result in quick effects of medicines. Please consult your doctor if symptoms persist.
