How Long Does An Anti Rabies Shot Remain Effective?
I was vaccinated for anti rabies 6 months back with RIG and tetanus. Last week a dog scratched me,so I went back today and got the first shot of the 0 day and will go back for the 3 day. My question is,how long is the vaccine that I got earlier (5 shots) valid. Did I have some amount of protection 6 months later,or am I too late to get the Injection now!? Is there any tentative time duration for which a vaccine can provide sufficient immunity for re-exposure. Would my antibody levels be enough during the time of second bite - since I got the Injection one week after the second bite.
Hello dear I understand your concern After a course of Rabiesvaccination, booster dose require after 2-5 years. So it can be said that adequate immunity will last for 5 years following full course of vaccination. In your case you have taken vaccine 6 months back. You will not need any booster dose for next 5 years. Some people get unnecessarily worked up out of sheer fear of Rabies. Vaccine should be taken when it is clearly indicated. Hope this may help you Best regards Dr. Sagar
