How Long Does Bone Keep Sticking Out Due To Infection?

how long can the bone stay sticking out of the skin,my son had his leg of about three years ago all was going well untill 2 months ago when he got a infection in it iv not seen him for 2 months and yesterday he showed me, boys they dont tell you much and as im his mum i need to know please help me
