Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 21 year old male. I recently had sex with someone who just finished treatment for Chlamydia. By recent I mean we abstained from sex the full week, and on the 7th day at a later time, we engaged in sexual contact. She took the doses on a Monday at around 5pm and we had intercourse the following Monday at about 11pm. My question is, is there a chance I am at risk? If so, is it a high chance or a low chance. I know to be certain I should be getting tested, and I will. I m just curious to know if it s common to catch it right after treatment? Should I be worried? YYYY@YYYY
Hi! Thank you for submitting this question. If you have both been treated for chlamydia with the appropriate antibiotic such as doxycycline for 7 days and are both symptom- free it is safe to engage in sexual intercourse. Ensure that no doses were missed. It is best to abstain from sex during treatment as you have done. If you or your partner engage in sexual intercourse with another person who has chlamydia but hasnt been treated then you may become re-infected. Symptoms to watch out for are discharge from the penis or burning on urination. Even if you have no symptoms, I recommend being re-tested in 3 months after completing treatment. Try to always use a condom as this reduces the risk of obtaining a sexually transmitted infection. Hope this helps!
