How Long Does Facial Swelling Take To Alleviate Post Intake Of Antibiotics?

I took my husband to the dentist yesterday with An abscess being the diagnosis. He was placed on metronide 400 mg 3 times daily and abbocillin vk 500mg 4 times a day. He is taking Panadol forte every 4 hours for pain relief. I am aware Nurofen is probably better however he seems to gain more relief with the forte.

This morning he awoke with a very swollen face on his left side and experienced a very uncomfortable night! How long does it take for the swelling to subside and the antibiotics to kick in? Thank you!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if your husband is diagnosed with a dental abscess, then swelling on face is due to pus accumulation in the soft tissues and inflammation..
As he is on antibiotics, it can take a long for 2 to 3 weeks, at times less for the swelling to subside, but such a long time can be uncomfortable as well as painful..
The best way to get faster relief is to get the treatment of the tooth done by root canal treatment or extraction followed by antibiotics and painkillers..
Only medications will not resolve the condition completely and even if it does there can be relapse of the symptoms and there can be severe pain and discomfort to recur..
I would suggest you to consult your dentist again or an Endodontist, get an x ray of tooth done and he can start an appropriate treatment depending upon condition of tooth..
In case if pain is severe higher painkillers like Tramadol or Ketorolac can be taken..
Do cool compresses over cheek..
Take soft diet..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
