How Long Does It Take For Elderly To Recover From Hip Fracture?

My 86 year old father fractured his hip four weeks ago. Pin and plate operation successful and physio going well until last Friday when we think he overdid a walk and was in horrendous pain. Put on oromorph and lost four days halucinating etc. Now back to normal mentally but has leg swelling and has not started walking again but sits in chair and does foot excercises. How long would you expect him to be hospitalised from now? How long do you think it will take him to recover?
