How Long Does It Take To Heal Bruised Rib From Injury?

Hi, I slipped in the bath the first weekend in December and ended up going to hospital. They X rayed me as my breathing was so bad they thought my lung was punctured. It wasn t. I was told my ribs were bruised and my lung wasn t drawing in enough air, but to go home and rest. It s over 8 weeks now and I m still struggling with breathing at times. I cannot wear a bra at all as the underwire sits on the injured rib and it s still painful to lay down in bed. Is this normal for a rib injury?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, trauma to bones may take time However 8 weeks are too much and in 8 weeks the pain should be quite good.

In fact, if your pain is improved a lot in this time ( reduced significantly from what it was at the start) then it's fine we a wait few more as it's settling down.

However, if there is no significant improvement in 8 weeks then I would advise that we should get another visit to your doc, maybe we need a scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman, General & Family Physician
