Hi,I am Raju.A.T (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Long Does It Take To Overcome Protein Deficiency?
After years of trying to live heathy and lose weight I am 59yrs of age, obese (160cm, 97kg) and protein deficient. I have been eating less and less and steadily gaining weight. I am now on a healthy diet, and satisfied for the moment to lose .5kg per week. I now eat balanced meals, with more fat and fewer carbs, but still good plates of veggies. My hair is breaking, I am often very tired. My question: I am now eating 90g of protein per day. How long does it take to recover from protein deficiency.
Hello, Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query. If you are taking 90gms of protein per day and are still protein deficient, it means that you are either losing protein in the urine, have a problem in the synthesis of protein in the body from the components absorbed from your diet. If you could let me know the Liver function tests and the urine examination for protein, I would be able to give you my opinion. If you can reduce your calorie intake by 500 calories per day, you could lose 0.5 kg of weight per week as 1 kg of fat is equal to 7,700 calories. As you restrict your food, your basal metabolic rate slows down and this will impair your weight loss. So along with diet you should do some simple muscle building exercises like dumbbells etc.
Best wishes, Dr. Noble Zachariah.
