How Long Does It Takes To Heal Nasal Scabbing? Could It Be A Reason For Nasal Congestion?

Hi, 44, 6'1,215...Have had nasal scabbing for 2 months now...seems when I started getting them I was told to use saline wash and I did, but the scabs would continue coming out...have dealt with for 2 months now due to dry air....for the last 2 days I have just left nose alone so scabs can heal skin under neath....but I do put neil med nasal gel in nose 2x daily....how long will it take for the scabs to heal....also, with the scabs does that cause my nasal congestion...I have it bad, especially nighttime, and I have to take pseudoephedrine nightly to breathe and sleep..thank you

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, scab formation can be because of dry weather or due to turbulent air flow through the nose which can be due to various causes obstructing the smooth air flow like DNS or turbinate hypertrophy. Some diseases like atrophic rhinitis can also lead to scab formation. The healing takes place with few weeks but re-scabbing is very common if underlying cause is not removed. So, please get an ENT examination done and find out the cause of scabbing in nose. Also use of lubricating ointment, liquid paraffin and saline irrigation helps. Scabbing can be a cause of nasal congestion as it can also lead to mechanical obstruction. Otherwise also pealing and reappearing leaves the underlying area inflamed and thus congestion. Regards
