How Long Does Juvenile Jaundice Take To Recover?

Hello, My wife is 27 years old. She has normal delivery. She had bleeding around 3 - 4 months during pregnancy. She is also very weak. No diabetic problem. My first son was also born in normal delivery. This Son is now 22 days old. He is on mother feeding. feeds well. Mother blood group is AB+ve and Son blood group is B-ve. He is suffering from Jaundice after 3 - 4 days of his birth. His whole body, face, feet eyes were pale yellow. He was admitted in hospital for phototherapy when he was 8 days old. At that time his LFT was 22. After 3 days he was discharged from hospital and at that time is LFT was 15.7. After discharge doctor prescribed for 2 injections Cefixime (150mg) and Grasil (20mg) to inject 2 times a day for four days. but still there is no proper recovery in jaundice. Last week we again LFT which was 18.6 . He is passing regular urine. Previously urine color was yellow. but now it is colorless. Stools not passing since 2 days. 2 days before its color was yellow, not very think, not very thin. Since last 1 week we are also exposing our son in morning sunlight for around 15 - 20 minutes. Please let us know when he will be recovered from Jaundice? we are much worried. Regards, Najum

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If all the symptoms of child are normal like feeding, sleeping as well as child is not having any fever, diarrhea, vomiting or excessive crying etc., then there seems no reason to be concerned. As most of the times, it is a self resolving condition with normal precautions and phototherapy etc. A minor variation of reading of bilirubin levels are not of importance.

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for the apparent symptoms to subside. However, if the bilirubin level still remain raised or increases, within 3 weeks, then there may be some other underlying cause and it needs to be examined by your pediatrician for evaluating the cause and treatment accordingly, if required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
