Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi! I have been diagnosed with pericoronitis and have just begun taking antibiotics. How long until the issue will be resolved? I went to the dentist just one day after realizing pain and possible infection. He said I had to have the flap surgically removed but I am an overseas student and dental is not covered in my insurance. When I told him I would be home in less than 2 months he said that will probably be too long. I m not sure what to do as I can not have the tooth pulled out of country and getting the flap removed is quite expensive. If the infection clears up, is it likely to recur soon? I drink plenty of fluids, am only eating things like oatmeal, yogurt and soup, and I brush my teeth and gargle with warm salt water after every meal. Will this be enough to hold me over until I am home? Thanks so much! Briauna
Pericoronitis occurs due to inflammation of the gum flap around the wisdom tooth.. It occurs due to food debris accumulation between the gum flap and the wisdom tooth causing infection which in turn causes inflammation, pain and swelling. I would suggest you to as of now take a course of antibiotics and painkillers and along with it gargle with antiseptic mouthwash solution.. Also do warm saline gargles 3-4 times a day.. Keep the area clean to prevent infection.. It is not necessary that the infection will continue to recur and it can take month for infection to occur again.. So you can take this course of management of infection and as soon as you reach your place you can get the wisdom tooth removed..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
