How Long Does The Pain From A Pinched Nerve Last?

My 83 year old Father has been diagnosed with a pinched nerve and arthritis ( had an MRI to get diagnosis) . It is in his back , but is affecting his hip.He was given pain medicine about 2 weeks ago, but the last 24 hours he has been in constant pain. It is keeping him up at night and he was in pain all day today. My question is how long does the pain from a pinched nerve last?

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

The pain can last as long as the nerve is being compressed or pinched.

Since the pain is severe, he likely needs additional pain medication to help control his discomfort.
In addition , he may need physiotherapy, this can also help by improving the strength of the muscles in the back.

If there is no relief with additional pain medication and physiotherapy, surgery would need to be considered.

I hope this helps
