How Long Is Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus Bacterial Infection Contagious Post Treatment?

Mother has been in a nursing home and will be discharged on this coming Friday. She has been being treated with VRE. It has now colonized and resistant to all meds. How long is she considered contagious? Asking to make sure how diligent to be on contact precautions in our home. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In colonized vancomycine resistant E.coli patients, infection may persist till the bacteria are cleared from the body. It may take from a week to some months many a times. Some time the patient has bacteria present in intestine, but there is no infection means that Patient is not contagious.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
