How Long Is Flu Virus Contagious?

THis is a simple one. I am scheduled to visit relatives and I have a cold, seems a normal clod for me. I a m thru the runny nose phase and into chest and slight cough. My Q is : how long is this virus generally contagious. I don t want to spread it when I travel or visit relatives. Thanks

this is not a simple question as you think :-)
flue is caused by a wide array of viruses,and each having different serotypes.each of them have different degree of communacability and communicable period...
but,definitely you can take some precautions to save others....these viruses or bacteria spread through droplets.so you can...
1)take anti histaminics and decongestents to decrease secretions(i prefer levocetirezine and phenylephrine to my patients)
2)use a handkerchief to block your droplets while you sneez.
3)visit them in open,well ventillated area than in closed space
4)avoid shakehands and hugs.
