How Long Will Antibiotics Take To Cure Strep Throat In A Child?

My 13 year old son throat swab was positive for strep throat infection. He has been feeling symptoms for 8 days, been on Penecillin for 2 full days and tonight he is still febrile 38.3 C, constant throat pain, terrible breath, coated tounge, white patch on right side of throat, headache, fatigue, nausea and dull gradual left abdominal pain, worse with palpation. I am wondering if he needs to be on different antibiotics because after 2 days, shouldn t he be feeling better?

Hi,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are wondering how much time will strep throat take to cure while on antibiotics which seems to be due to infection in throat leading to strep throat. It can take around a week to 10 days to cure. I would suggest you take a proper diet and do warm saline gargles several times a day daily. Sometimes sore throat occurs due to viral infection and antibiotics won't help and it takes time to get back to the normal. You should avoid hot, sharp, spicy food substances and carbonated beverages. For pain and swelling, you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out a condition like a viral infection.
