How Long Will It Take To Recover From Knee Surgery?

My friend just had a surgery on his knee after he fell off the stairs. He has a screw fixed in his knee for a year now. however, he still gets pain and cramps on the same leg and is unable to walk and still hospitalized. how long will it take for him to recover and get discharge? And what is the reason of the cramps?
