How Many Amlodipine 2 1/2 Mg Tablet Can Be Taken Per Day?

My dad is 87 and has been prescribed 2 1/2 mg of amlodipine a day. However, he takes his blood pressure several times a day and takes a pill every time the bp is 135 on the top number. Sometimes he has taken 3 pills in a day. Is this dangerous? He went to a cardiologist yesterday who said his heart is in great shape for a man his age.
