How Many Days Of Hospitalization Required For Pancreatitis??
MY DAUGHTER WENT TO EMERGENCY THIS A.M.WITH SEVERE PAIN IN STOMACH & BACK,TOOK BLOOD TEST WHICH DID NOT SHOW BUT CAT SKAN WDYE SHOWED SHE HAS PANCREAITIS,SHE WAS GIVEN 2 SHOTS OF MORPHINE,FIRST ONE DIDNT HELP,DR SENT HER HOME WITH PAIN MEDS AND INSTRUCTIONS TO REST AND EAT LIGHT, MY QUESTION IS SHOULDNT SHE HAVE BEEN KEPT IN HOSPITAL AT LEAST FOR OBSERVATION??
Fortunately, most of cases of acute pancreatitis are mild and mostly resolve with supportive care like medicines to control pain, intravenous fluid with no oral intake first few days, and a light diet for next few days particularly if nausea and/or vomiting is present.
In my opinion also, even if no vomiting is present and there is no need of IV fluids, still a short hospitalization of 2-3 days for observation should be there, once the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis is made or suspected to avoid the further complications of pseudocyst, infection, necrosis and multiple organ failure etc.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
