How Often Should One Have A Cholesterol Check?

Hi I recently had a health check at work and was told my cholesterol is 6.9. I was quite surprised as am conscious about what I eat and exercise regularly. Am going to try to lower it with diet but how soon should I get it checked again and can having the mirena coil fitted or taking sertraline have any effect on it?

Hello,
Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.
Your result for cholesterol is a high value, 6.9 m mol /l(=267 mg/dl) the desirable value is below 5.5 m mol/l(below 200 mg/dl),as you know you have a high value for the cholesterol blood test.
There are different guidelines for check of the cholesterol blood test; it depends on your cholesterol level and your other health problems. If cholesterol levels are high (usually over 200 mg/dl), that is your case, often start on medicine to reduce the cholesterol and usually begin a low-cholesterol diet. Then the cholesterol levels are usually checked about every three months to see if the levels normalize. When the level normalizes rechecked can occur at least once per year. With the intake of cholesterol-lowering medication you should monitor the liver function with liver blood test like Aspartate aminotransferase(AST), formerly called SGOT ; alanine aminotransferase (ALT), formerly called SGPT .These medications can affect and the muscle, but is rare side effect .
For the intake of Sertrali during the consummation of cholesterol-lowering medication it doesn’t affect each other, but I recommended monitoring your muscle state if you feel muscle cramps or weakness you should go to your doctor. There is no interference with Mirena coil fitted, but for any problem that can happen you should consult with your doctor.
Hope I give answer to your problem. Feel free to ask me again
Take care,
