How Often Should The Thyroid Be Screened For Cancerous Nodules?

I have had half of my thyroid removed due to nodules that were found. I had an ultrasound and a biopsy of nodules and was told by doctor that they were cancerous so had it removed. My question is how often should I be getting screened for recurrence and could it reoccure?

Hi,

People who have thyroid cancer, and who had removed thyroid, should have an life long follow up to detect early recurrence. This should be done once in a year, i.e. annually, to check for any lymph node, or thyroid mass, clinically, TSH should also be checked and should be kept suppressed. The tumor marker thyroglobulin should be checked annually and this should not be detectable in any person who has done thyroid ablation. If this is detected, search should be done for any recurrence. However, this may be detectable in the first six months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
