How Should Norco Be Taken?

My sister has cancer, and is diabetic, and was prescribed Norco for pain. The doctor thinks it sciatica related. She has severe vomiting because she takes this drug without food. She doesn t have an appetite, therefore won t eat. Should she try using this drug with food? Should she even be on it if her blood sugar is out of control (between 200-300 most of the time)?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Norco contains a combination of Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is an opioid pain medication. Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of Hydrocodone. My advice is to take Norco exactly as prescribed and to follow all directions on its prescription label. Never take this medicine in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed duration. Since Norco is taken as needed and your sister is vomiting, I suggest to take this drug with food. This drugs do not cause high blood sugar. In your sister's case in actual situation there are a lot of other factors (stress, pain, etc.) that can be the culprit of her diabetes disequilibrium. So, the treatment of pain in necessary and in my opinion, she can take Norco even if her blood sugar is out of control.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo
